A curiosity about the whale has been a part of me for as long as I can remember. When I was a very smallchild,my grandfather used to sing a song that began:
In the North sea lived a whale
Big of bone and large of tail.
The song went on to describe how this whale was the master of his world until theday when it met a stranger: a big greaming silver fish who refused to acknowledge the whale’s mastery. The whale grew angry and slapped the stranger with its tail. That was a fatal mistake, because the atrange fish was actually a torpedo. The mortal of the song was: it does not pay to be a bully. Inever understood it that way, me sympathy was with the whale — the victim, as it seemed to me symped to me, of a very dirty trick.
As I grew older, the whale became a symbol of ultimate secrets that have not yet been revealed to us. Whenever anything came about whales, I understood from all my reading was that the whales were doomed to disappear and carry their secrets with them.

Where ships go to die
22 We might not think about it much, but most of us owe a lot to the shipping industry. Almost anyone who______________________ BUY a car, clothes or furniture recently has benefitted from the industry, because it is the cheapest way to transport goods.
23 No matter where a ship has sailed during its life, most ships ______________________ SEND to South Asia when they are no longer usable. India, Bangladesh and Pakistan alone take up to 70% of worn-out ships.
24 The ships rest along the shoreline, where workers climb on them and take them apart piece by piece. In 2012, observers recorded that 365 ships ______________________ LIE on beaches in this region.
25 The work is quite dangerous, and occasionally, workers lose ______________________ THEY lives. More must be done to make this work safe.

E-MAIL MESSAGES
Because of its speed and informality, e-mail is ideal for routine communication between coworkers. For instance, an e-mail message is usually the best means of announcing a new policy, introducing a recent hire, informing colleagues of a meeting time, and reminding an employee of an approaching deadline.
E-mail messages are also useful for day-to-day or extremely timely exchanges with people outside the company. Because of their low cost, they often are preferred for communicating with overseas contacts.

Have you ever heard of Guinness World Records? It is a reference book about
the most amazing record holders and their story : from the tallest
sandcastle to the fastest runner in the world. In 1951, Sir Hugh Beaver (who at that
time worked for the Guinness Brewery) be
at a party and argued
with one of the guests. They wanted to know which bird in Europe was the
fast
. However, they not/can find the answer. Sir Hugh
thought there were a lot of similar questions, and a book with the answers would
be popular. He began to work and in 1955 publish
the one
book of world records.

5.Writing a book
6.The history of success
7.The doubts about the project
8.Too expensive for me
A.The history of this book is now quite complicated. So every time I try to tell it I don’t tell it right. And when finally I tell it right, I’m misunderstood. So the publication of this edition seemed like a good opportunity to clear up some facts about this book.
B.It started when I was traveling in Austria as a hitch hiker. I didn’t buy a book ‘Europe on Five Dollars a Day’, because I didn’t have as much money as that for travelling. So I’ve borrowed from someone a very old copy of the ‘Hitch Hiker’s Guide to Europe’ which suited me well.
C.After I spent a day in Innsbruck, I went out into the countryside and lay down in the field. The stars came out and I thought, it might be good if someone would write a ‘Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’ as well. That’s how the idea of this book was born.
D.Then I was addressed by someone from BBC with an idea of making the radio series on science fiction. And that’s when the idea of this book popped up again in my mind. I think that the BBC’s officials hesitated a lot about this project but they had little choice for it has been started already.
E.When the script was ready, we started the recording. Sometimes we were working with the sound engineers for weeks to produce a single sound effect. Everyone complained that we are stealing their studio time and this was absolutely true. The budget of the series has grown up twice by that time.
F.In the meantime I was also writing for other radio series and editing the scripts for TV series. Of course it is very nice to be the author of some radio program and tell your friends that you are on the radio, but on the other hand that doesn’t bring you a lot of money at once.
G.The first episode went out on BBC Radio 4 on March 8, 1978. But it seemed to pass unnoticed for there was no publicity, no discussion in magazines and newspapers. So all we were doing seemed to be pointless. But then the book “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” was published in England in September 1979 and appeared on the Sunday Times best-seller list at number one and just stayed there. That’s how it has got to be popular.

Matilda’s family decided to have a holiday near a lake in
Cornwall. On their way to the lake, Matilda’s father told
her the legend of King Arthur. The day was hot and the

in the same lake King Arthur’s sword Excalibur had disappeared

THE UNITED KINGDOM OF GREAT BRITAIN AND NORTHERN IRELAND
The british isles is a group of island not far from the north coast of the main eropean continental. you can see the main islands of the british isles in the pictyre. the two lardest islands are called great britain and ireland? and ther are also about six thousand smaller islan as well. ther are three countries on the largest island, great britain, england? scotland and wales.these 3 countries have separate parlaments, although they are a part of the same state? the uniyed kindom. the UK actually consist of 4 countries: england, scotland, wales and northern ireland.
Countries within a Country
The official name of Great Britain is The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. But it is often called in many ways. It can be called the United Kingdom, or the British Isles, or Great Britain. But what are the British Isles? And what is the difference between Great Britain and the United Kingdom? Why is England or the UK sometimes called Britain? The name United Kingdom refers to the union ofwhat were once four separate countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland (though most of Ireland is now independent). The different history of England, Scotland and Wales has led to very different cultural traditions; The Scots and Welsh have right to feel angry when the term «English» is used wrongly, to mean all three.Scotland was a totally separate country from England, but in 1707 England and Scotland were united as one country. Since 1997, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have had their own parliaments.
The second largest island in the British Isles is called Ireland. The native language of Ireland is Eire. This is where the name Ireland comes from. Ireland is divided into 2 countries. The Republic of Ireland, in the south, is now completely separate from the United Kingdom, but a small area in the North of Ireland is still a part of the UK. That is why the full title of the UK is «The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.»
Many of the countries in the British Isles have their own languages, absolutely unrelated to English. In many cases native languages are spoken by only a small number of people, but in Wales the Welsh language is still the first language. In some parts of North Wales English is learned as a foreign language! Some of the islands in the British Isles, such as the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands, have their own laws, taxation and government. They also have their own flags and are politically separate from the UK and the Republic of Ireland.
текст 2 WHY LEARN ENGLISH? ENGLISH AROUND THE WORLD
Approximately 375 million people in the world speak English as their first language. By number of native speakers it is the largest language after Mandarin Chinese. However, when combining native and non-native speakers, English is the most commonly spoken language in the world. It is claimed that non-native speakers now outnumber native speakers by a ratio of three to one. Modern English is sometimes called the first world language. Why is it so? The answers are:
1. Now English is the international language in communications, science, business, aviation, entertainment, radio and diplomacy.
2. Most pages on the Internet are in English. Over 95 per cent of scientific articles are written in English.
3.You can travel more easily because English is spoken in more than 100 countries.
4. Nowadays, English is commonly required for many jobs. Knowledge of English may help you to get the job you wanted!
5. About one and a half billion people around the world speak English and another billion people are learning it.
