A curiosity about the whale has been a part of me for as long as I can remember. When I was a very smallchild,my grandfather used to sing a song that began:

In the North sea lived a whale

Big of bone and large of tail.

The song went on to describe how this whale was the master of his world until theday when it met a stranger: a big greaming silver fish who refused to acknowledge the whale’s mastery.The whale grew angry and slapped the stranger with its tail. That was a fatal mistake, because the atrange fish was actually a torpedo. The mortal of the song was: it does not pay to be a bully. Inever understood it that way, me sympathy was with the whale — the victim, as it seemed to me symped to me, of a very dirty trick.

As I grew older,the whale became a symbol of ultimate secrets that have not yet been revealed to us. Whenever anything came about whales, I understood from all my reading was that the whales were doomed to disappear and carry their secrets with them.
