The white lake has an almost perfect round shape. Its length and width are about 40 kilometers, and the depth, gradually increasing, reaches 4-5 meters. About 60 rivers flow into the White Lake, there are more of them in the high water.

The White Lake catchment is the initial link of one of the largest branches of the Volga water system. All water from the White Sea-Caspian and Baltic-Caspian watersheds enters the White Lake, and then through the Sheksna River flows from it to the Volga and the Caspian Sea.
